15 Fascinating Facts About Medieval Castles

The Strongholds That Shaped History

By Oakfield Publishing

When most people think of the Middle Ages, they imagine towering stone castles perched on hillsides, surrounded by knights, kings, queens, and epic battles. Castles have become one of the most recognizable symbols of medieval life, but the reality behind these impressive structures is often even more fascinating than the legends.

From secret passageways to unusual defenses, medieval castles were marvels of engineering, strategy, and survival.

Here are fifteen fascinating facts about medieval castles that reveal just how remarkable they truly were.

1. Not All Castles Were Made of Stone

Many of the earliest castles were actually built from wood.

Following the Norman Conquest of England in 1066, "motte-and-bailey" castles became common. These fortifications featured wooden towers built atop earthen mounds surrounded by fences and trenches.

Over time, many were replaced with the stone castles we recognize today.

2. Castles Could Take Decades to Build

Constructing a large stone castle was an enormous undertaking.

Some castles took ten years or more to complete, while massive fortresses could require several decades of construction and expansion.

Building a castle required skilled stonemasons, carpenters, blacksmiths, laborers, and enormous financial resources.

3. The Moat Was More Than Decoration

Moats weren't just picturesque water features.

They served as a critical defensive barrier designed to slow attackers and prevent siege equipment from reaching castle walls.

Not all moats contained water. Some were simply deep trenches known as dry moats.

4. Spiral Staircases Had a Defensive Purpose

Most castle spiral staircases were built to turn clockwise as they ascended.

Why?

Because most attackers were right-handed.

Defenders moving downward had more room to swing their weapons, while attackers climbing upward found themselves restricted by the central column.

It was a clever architectural advantage.

5. Castles Were Small Communities

A castle wasn't just a fortress.

It was often a thriving community.

Depending on its size, a castle could contain:

  • Soldiers

  • Servants

  • Blacksmiths

  • Bakers

  • Stable workers

  • Priests

  • Nobles and their families

Some castles housed hundreds of people.

6. The Great Hall Was the Heart of the Castle

The Great Hall served as the main gathering place.

It was used for:

  • Feasts

  • Court proceedings

  • Celebrations

  • Political meetings

  • Daily meals

In many castles, the Great Hall was the most important room in the entire complex.

7. Castles Had Primitive Bathrooms

Medieval castles featured toilets called garderobes.

These were often small stone seats built into the walls with a vertical shaft leading downward.

Waste would fall into pits, trenches, or moats below.

While practical, they weren't exactly luxurious.

8. Arrow Slits Were Designed for Protection

The narrow vertical openings found in castle walls are known as arrow slits.

These allowed defenders to fire arrows at attackers while exposing very little of themselves to return fire.

Some were cleverly angled to increase the range of fire.

9. Castle Walls Could Be Incredibly Thick

Many castle walls were several feet thick.

Some major fortresses featured walls more than ten feet thick, capable of withstanding siege weapons and attacks.

Their massive size also helped regulate indoor temperatures.

10. Secret Passages Were Real

Unlike many fantasy stories, secret passages actually existed in some castles.

These hidden routes were used for:

  • Escape during attacks

  • Moving supplies

  • Private movement within the castle

Not every castle had them, but enough did to fuel centuries of legends.

11. Siege Warfare Could Last Months

Capturing a castle was rarely quick.

Many sieges lasted for months and sometimes years.

Rather than attacking directly, armies often surrounded castles and attempted to starve defenders into surrendering.

As a result, castles stored large amounts of food and supplies.

12. Castles Were Symbols of Power

A castle wasn't merely a military structure.

It was a statement.

The larger and more impressive the castle, the greater the wealth and influence of its owner.

Castles served as both defensive strongholds and political symbols.

13. Not Every Castle Saw Battle

Many castles never experienced major warfare.

Some functioned primarily as administrative centers, noble residences, or regional government hubs.

Their defensive features were often as much about deterrence as actual combat.

14. Medieval Builders Were Remarkably Skilled

Many castles have survived for hundreds of years.

Despite lacking modern machinery, medieval builders created structures capable of enduring centuries of weather, conflict, and change.

Their craftsmanship remains impressive even by modern standards.

15. Castles Continue to Inspire Stories Today

Perhaps the most fascinating fact of all is that castles remain deeply woven into our imagination.

They appear in:

  • Fantasy novels

  • Historical fiction

  • Movies

  • Television shows

  • Video games

From epic kingdoms and noble knights to dark secrets hidden behind ancient walls, castles continue to inspire storytellers across generations.

Why We Still Love Castles

Castles represent adventure, mystery, history, and imagination.

They remind us of a world filled with kings and queens, battles and legends, honor and intrigue.

Whether you're fascinated by medieval history or simply enjoy epic fantasy stories, castles provide a window into a time that continues to capture our imagination.
