Sword of Mercy

Some families inherit fortunes. Others inherit curses.

This month, Fieldhouse Publishing shines the Author Spotlight on Doug Phillips, author of the supernatural thriller Sword of Mercy, a story where family history, psychological suspense, and the restless dead collide in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

A Honeymoon Into the Past

Newlyweds Peter and Angie West should be beginning the happiest chapter of their lives. Their honeymoon takes them across Canada before bringing them to Angie’s home in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

But Peter carries something with him that no honeymoon can leave behind.

He is heir to a mining fortune built during the harsh working conditions of the nineteenth century. His father and grandfather both died violently, and Peter has become convinced that generations of suffering have left his family cursed.

Even more disturbing?

Peter sees ghosts.

Before their marriage, Angie persuaded Peter to seek help from hypnotherapist Dr. Brenneman. Eventually, the doctor proposes an unusual solution: Peter should visit one of his family’s abandoned mining sites near Houghton, Michigan, confront the source of his fears, and finally put the past behind him.

Instead, getting closer to the mine only makes things worse.

Two Groups of Spirits. Two Very Different Plans.

Peter soon discovers that the apparitions following him aren't random. There appear to be two separate groups of spirits, and each seems to want something different from him.

Meanwhile, Dr. Brenneman has problems of his own. Diagnosed with inoperable cancer and driven by a mysterious directive received after Confession, he desperately races toward Michigan. With the help of a tough female private investigator, he attempts to reach Peter and Angie before they enter the mine.

Because whatever awaits Peter underground may have nothing to do with therapy.

Why Readers Should Discover Sword of Mercy

Doug Phillips blends supernatural mystery, psychological suspense, family secrets, faith, and the dark history of America's mining industry into a story where the past refuses to stay buried.

The abandoned mines of Michigan's Upper Peninsula provide an atmospheric setting for a mystery that stretches across generations. At its heart is Peter's struggle to discover whether he's suffering from fear and trauma—or whether the dead truly intend to collect an old family debt.

Readers have praised the book's suspense, characters, escalating stakes, and Phillips' storytelling.

Fieldhouse Publishing is proud to spotlight Doug Phillips and Sword of Mercy.

Can you escape a family curse when the dead are determined to collect what they're owed?
